IronForged™ Decks

IronForged™ Decks are standard on all TimeCutter 50", 54" & 60" models and optional on 42" models. IronForged™ decks are fully welded/fabricated from 10 gauge 50,000 psi steel. This steel is nearly 50% stronger than the typical 11 gauge 36,000 psi steel often found on other consumer welded decks. Because of this strength, a support bar along the bottom of the discharge chute is not needed and it's absence makes this deck flow better, a characteristic of commercial decks.

Seats / Comfort / MyRIDE

With a traditional riding mower you are leaning up over a steering wheel most of the time which diminishes any additional comfort provided by a high back seat. But on a zero turn you can kick back an relax and having a high back seat makes all the difference. Customers often find their yard seems bumpier when they upgrade to a zero turn from a traditional riding tractor. This is because zero turns usually travel faster which amplifies the the bumps. Just like driving over a traffic bump or railroad tracks in a vehicle, the faster you travel the more aggressive the bumps become. MyRide absorbs most of the bumps by suspending the driver on an operator platform that has over 3" of vertical float.

42" is Big Enough for a Small Yard Right? Yes.  But.....

From a productivity standpoint, yes, but it is not uncommon for us to see customers who purchased 42" or smaller Zero Turns to later be seeking to purchase bigger tires for more traction because they are having trouble navigating a slope or are just tired of having to be extra careful to not tear up the yard. Having wider tires or larger diameter tires does help traction by getting more tire on the ground. But just as big a factor is the leverage created by getting the rear tires further apart from each other. It's similar to spreading your hands apart on a grocery cart handle. If you place your hands closer together, you don't have near as much leverage to wield the nose of the cart left and right. Like the grocery cart, the zero turn is steered from the rear. For this reason a 48" or 50" TimeCutter with its wider stance will steer with substantially more ease than a 42". And a 34" has so much worse traction than a 42" that I jokingly tell customers a 34" starts to loose traction when it sees a slope in the distance, which is not much of an exaggeration. You have to be extra careful not to spin up the yard even on flat ground with a 34". Even if you don't have a ditch line or a steep area to deal with, the extra traction makes it easier and often quicker to navigate on flat ground. One analogy would be driving your car on gravel vs pavement, you are able to steer and accelerate more abruptly on pavement than on gravel because you have more traction. On the other hand, don't forget to measure and make sure your new mower can go where it needs to go. Places like the storage shed door, the fence gate to the back yard, your trailer, etc.

Would a TimeCutter be a good choice for a mowing side business?

Probably not. Sometimes people mowing yards on the side assume that since they are mowing residential yards that a residential mower would be the right choice. But the right choice is less about "what" you are mowing, and more about "how many hours" you are mowing. The typical home owner mows around 30 hours a year, where as someone with a part time business mowing evenings and weekends could easily put 30 hours on a machine in a few weeks. So a residential grade mower that might last a home owner a decade or two, might last a part time landscaper only a year or two. Where the home owner might need a new belt every 3 - 6 years, the part time mowing business operator might go through 3 belts in a year and the same for other wear components, causing more down time. And being used in this capacity the TimeCutter would have just a 30 day warranty from date of purchase. If your budget just won't allow more than the TimeCutter then at least go into it with your eyes open knowing that you need to be setting some mowing profits aside for a replacement not too far down the road.A much much better choice for the part time landscaper, or even the homeowner that just wants to buy a better piece of equipment, might be the TITAN which does have a commercial warranty and is built to a completely different standard delivering much greater longevity, less down time and better performance. Some of the differences include a much heavier deck, deck belt, blade spindles, transmissions, bigger tires and so on. Beyond the steel thickness used in a deck is how much steel is used and how it is reinforced. While the TimeCutter IronForged™ decks are well constructed for a residential deck, they don't hold a candle to the TITAN decks even thought they are both constructed from 10ga steel. We keep them both in our showroom so you can come see the difference for yourself. There are some pictures illustrating the differences at the bottom of the TITAN product page linked here.

What should really matter when selecting a new mower?

Buyers tend to focus on design, performance and initial quality which are of course important. But what sometimes gets forgotten until you need it is after the sale support. A dealer that stands behind the product and a manufacturer that stands behind the dealer to help you when you need help. If you are buying a mower that you expect to last a decade or two or more then it is important to deal with a manufacturer that will likely have parts for your mower decades after the purchase. And a dealer that is likely to be around to support you with parts, service and warranty over the long term. At B T South we see mower owners daily asking if we can match up a part because their nearest dealer is so far away or does not stock parts or the part is no longer available or the manufacturer went out of business. Daily we see mower owners asking if we will please, please work on their mower because the line at their dealer is weeks or sometimes months long. We are usually not in a position to help them because we specialize in servicing the few brands we sell which is the very reason we are able to have the knowledge and parts in stock to service our customers quickly and efficiently. It comes down to not having regrets. Think about the long term and make a purchase that you can look back on many years from now and say "If I had it to do over, I would do it the same."
